CHANDRACHUR SINGH'S INSPIRATIONAL LIFE-STORY, FROM BATTLING NEAR FATAL ACCIDENT IN GOA TO BEING A SINGLE DAD AND MAKING A COMEBACK WITH AARYA

Chandrachur Singh’s journey in Bollywood is one of remarkable talent and resilience, punctuated by highs of early success and lows of personal and professional setbacks. He made his debut in the 1996 film "Maachis," a performance that immediately catapulted him into the spotlight.

Chandrachur Singh’s portrayal of a young man caught in the turmoil of insurgency was compelling and earned him acclaim as one of the promising newcomers in the industry. His meteoric rise continued with prominent roles in films such as "Josh," "Dil Kya Kare," and "Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa," establishing him as a versatile actor capable of handling a range of roles.

Severe accident in Goa

This period of success was abruptly halted due to an unforeseen tragedy. During a trip to Goa, Chandrachur Singh was involved in a severe jet skiing accident, which drastically changed the trajectory of his life and career.

In an interview, Chandrachur Singh recounted the accident, stating, “I had an accident while jet skiing in Goa. I had lost my grip and my right hand was pulled out of the shoulder joint. There were multiple dislocations and I had to go through major surgery. I couldn’t shoot at a stretch, the pain would often become unbearable and I would have to leave shoots midway. Also, due to the medication, my weight would fluctuate drastically.”

Accident changed his appearance

The accident led to a prolonged period of pain and rehabilitation, affecting his physical appearance and his ability to work consistently in the demanding world of Bollywood. The changes in his physical appearance due to medications and treatments were so drastic that he chose to take a sabbatical from the film industry. His absence from the silver screen led to speculation and curiosity about his whereabouts and personal life. Yet, he remained out of the public eye, focusing instead on his recovery and reassessing his priorities.

Marriage with Avantika

During this time away from the limelight, Chandrachur Singh's personal life came to the forefront, albeit in a quiet and understated manner. He married Avantika Mankotia in 1990 in a private ceremony at a farmhouse in Mehrauli, well away from the media’s gaze. Avantika belonged to the distinguished Mankotia family of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, with her father, Thakur Ajai Singh Mankotia, being a respected figure with significant political influence in the region. The couple was blessed with a son a few years into their marriage.

Separation with wife

Despite his attempts to keep his private life out of the spotlight, it became known that Chandrachur Singh and his wife had drifted apart, leaving him with the responsibility of being a single father. Reflecting on this role, the actor shared, “Actually, I am a single father so that took up most of my time. I am pretty hands-on; I needed to be. So, I was occupied being a father for most of my time. I am actually not very skilled at handling social media. My son is going to teach me more about it. It is not my cup of tea so far but there will be a time when I will have much more work and I can then connect with the people about my work. Otherwise, I am not very media savvy.”

Being a proud single father

Chandrachur Singh embraced fatherhood with dedication, choosing to focus on his son rather than the trappings of fame and public recognition. His commitment to being a present and engaged parent is evident in his reflections on the experience: “I don’t know. I guess my son would be the best person to answer this question. I believe that I keep learning on the job. Parenting, I think, is one of the toughest jobs. You make mistakes, you have your good moments, you keep learning and try to become better.”

Away from the pressures of Bollywood, he found solace in his love for music. A trained classical singer, Chandrachur Singh had been deeply connected to music from a young age.

Before his film debut, he worked as a music teacher at the Vasant Valley School and as a history teacher at his alma mater, The Doon School in Dehradun. Music, for him, was more than a hobby—it was a passion that helped him navigate the tough times during his sabbatical from acting.

His son, too, became a significant source of strength and happiness. In a candid interview, he stated, “Being with my son was important to me and I don’t regret my decision one bit! Also, spirituality, music, and above all, my son helped me sail through the bad times.”

After a long hiatus, Chandrachur Singh made a remarkable comeback in the web series "Arya," starring alongside Sushmita Sen. The show brought him back into the public consciousness, reintroducing him to a new generation of viewers who appreciated his depth and range as an actor. The audience’s response to his performance was overwhelmingly positive, proving that his talent had not dimmed over the years.

Chandrachur Singh’s story is one of resilience, not just in facing a career-altering accident but in navigating the complexities of personal life with grace and dedication. His decision to step back from the spotlight to prioritize his health and family speaks volumes about his character. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, true strength lies in making the difficult choice to step away, to heal, and to grow, away from the public eye.

Through his journey, Chandrachur Singh has shown that while the glitz and glamour of Bollywood can be alluring, there is more to life than what meets the eye. His focus on family, his dedication to being a good father, and his willingness to adapt and evolve with time highlight the essence of a true artist—one who is not afraid to face life’s challenges head-on and come out stronger on the other side. Today, Chandrachur Singh stands as an inspiration, reminding us all of the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to oneself, no matter the circumstances.
