"THEY GOT THIS CRAZY IDEA ABOUT ME WRESTLING YOU": WWE HALL OF FAMER DISCUSSES CREATING THE ICONIC FAMILY RIVALRY AT WRESTLEMANIA X
On a recent episode of the “Attitude Era Podcast,” WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart provided insights into his iconic match against his brother Owen Hart at WrestleMania X. This bout, celebrated for its intensity, remains a key chapter in the Hart family’s legacy.
"The Hitman" discussed how the idea for the match came to be. “When they gave me the idea about me wrestling my brother, I went back and I talked to Owen about it. I said, ‘They got this crazy idea about me wrestling you.’ It actually was going to be one of my other brothers first [Bruce]. That brother was not able to wrestle me. I remember saying, ‘But Owen’s the better wrestler,’ and if I was going to do that idea, I’d have to do it with Owen.”
Owen was excited about the storyline and eager to make it happen, but Bret stressed the importance of maintaining “kayfabe,” the practice of keeping the illusion of reality in wrestling. “When I got to the building the next day, I remember Owen came up to me and goes, ‘I want to do it.’ I said, ‘If you want to do it, we’ll do it,’ but remember this, Owen, if we do this thing, we do it old school. We don’t talk to each other.’”
Their dedication to the storyline extended beyond the ring, even during family gatherings at the Hart House in Calgary. “I remember, like, even at my mom’s house for Sunday dinners, he’d sit at one end of the table, I’d sit at the other end of the table. We’d walk right past each other, but never say anything to each other.”
Owen Hart won their initial match, which opened WrestleMania X and is remembered for its athleticism and storytelling. Owen, considered one of Bret’s toughest opponents, brought real family tension into the ring, elevating the narrative and leaving a lasting legacy in WWE history.
Bret Hart Looks Back on Legendary SummerSlam Match with Owen Hart
SummerSlam 1994 featured one of the most acclaimed World Championship matches in the event's history. Bret Hart, the reigning WWF Champion, took on his brother Owen Hart in a 32-minute showdown inside the iconic blue steel cage.
Despite the match’s legendary status, Bret Hart revealed in a 2017 interview with Justin Barrasso, reposted as part of Sports Illustrated’s SummerSlam series, that the brothers were not in favor of the cage stipulation. He shared: “We never wanted to have a cage match. The truth was, I would have liked to have had a ladder match against Owen. We couldn’t do that because Shawn Michaels had used the idea at WrestleMania [against Scott Hall].”
