DAVID HENRIE ON HOW FANS TRIED TO BRIBE HIM FOR HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER ENDING: 'KEPT SENDING ME DRINKS'

David Henrie, who played one of Ted Mosby’s teenage children on the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother, recently revealed that he knew about the show’s ending from season 2. Henrie recalled on a recent episode of The George Janko Show podcast that as the series progressed, it got tough to hang out in public without being approached by fans. Many would bombard him with questions, especially regarding the much-anticipated ending of the show.

“I remember, like, season 6 or 7 or whatever — by then I’d turned 21 and I would go to a bar and people would be like, ‘We’ve heard you know the ending! And they’d be sending me drinks to try to get it out of me,” Henrie said.

While fans of the sitcom waited nine seasons to discover the identity of the mother, Henrie and Lyndsy Fonseca were let in on the secret much earlier. According to Henrie, the show’s creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, had to share key details about the series’ finale with him and Fonseca as early as the second season.

Henrie and Fonseca played the teenage children of Ted Mosby, who were seen in scenes set in 2030, listening to their father recount the story of how he met their mother. While Josh Radnor portrayed the present-day Ted on the show, the future version of the character was voiced by Bob Saget, who narrated the entire series. To maintain consistency of the show, the producers filmed Henrie and Fonseca’s scenes early on, ensuring their appearance remained the same since their characters were shown sitting on the same couch for across all the episodes.

“They were like, ‘We gotta [film] this kid out, as soon as humanly possible. We gotta shoot as many episodes as we can’,” Henrie told hosts Janko and Shawna Della-Ricca on their podcast. That also involved filming what he described as “What if…” scenes, including some for a potential finale.

“We were on set and the two showrunners came in, the guys who created the show, and they go, ‘Everyone out! Everyone out! They left the cameras rolling. They brought in NDAs, and me and Lyndsy signed the NDAs. And we’re like, ‘What’s happening?’ Henrie continued.

Henrie further added, “And they go, ‘Okay, we’re gonna tell you what we think the end of the show is’.” He went on to say, “This is what they thought the ending was back then. So they go, ‘We don’t know, we’re in season 2, but we gotta get back to Robin somehow’.”

In the end, Robin (portrayed by Cobie Smulders) wasn’t revealed as the mother, despite early speculation. Instead, the series wrapped up with Ted reconnecting to Robin in 2030 after his wife Tracy passed away in the show due to chronic illness.

Henrie shared that he kept the ending a secret for nearly eight years, even with fans offering him drinks in exchange for answers. “I didn’t tell anybody until the end of the show. I didn’t tell a single person — what I was told, at least,” he said.

Meanwhile, Henrie will reprise his iconic role in Disney’s The Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a spin-off and sequel to the original series, alongside Selena Gomez.
