PRABHAS’ SALAAR SURPASSES SHAH RUKH KHAN’S PATHAAN TO BECOME THIRD BIGGEST OPENING FOR AN INDIAN FILM IN JAPAN

Salaar becomes the third-biggest opening for an Indian film in Japan after SS Rajamouli's 2022 film RRR and Prabhas' 2019 film Saaho. The Prashanth Neel directorial film released in Japan on July 5, six months after it debuted in December last year; the film's star Prabhas enjoys a massive fanbase in the country.

According to Sacnilk, Salaar grossed JPY 18.2 million (Rs 95 lakh) in the first weekend, playing at nearly 200 locations. The film has surpassed the collection of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan (2023) which grossed JPY 14.6 million in the opening weekend in Japan to score the third biggest start for an Indian title.

So far, SS Rajamouli's RRR starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, and Ajay Devgn in the lead role remains the biggest Indian opener in the anime country with JPY 44 million in 2022, followed by Prabhas' Saaho with JPY 23 million. Salaar's current collection at the Japan box office stands at JPY 23 million after earning another JPY 5 million on Monday and Tuesday, according to Sacnilk.

Produced by Hombale Films, Salaar Ceasefire starred Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles. The film collected over Rs 700 crore at the worldwide box office after its release on 22 December, 2023. The film, was one of the highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and third-highest for Prabhas at that time.

The makers of Salaar Ceasefire have also announced a sequel to the film. It is titled Salaar 2: Shouryanga Parvam. The film was supposed to go on floors in the first half of 2024. However, there has not been any reports about it.
