AFTER AASHIQUI 2 AND KABIR SINGH, HOW AHAAN PANDAY AND ANEET PADDA'S SAIYAARA COULD TAKE ROMANTIC MUSICALS FORWARD

Bollywood has ridden many waves in recent years. While larger-than-life spectacles like RRR, Pushpa, and Pathaan ruled the box office, there was also a refreshing burst of unconventional stories with films like Stree 2, Madgaon Express, and Laapataa Ladies. Amid this interesting mix, one thing remained noticeably absent: timeless love stories on the big screen. Despite a few attempts to rekindle romance in cinema, the old-world charm of cinematic love seemed to be fading.

But hope is on the horizon. Yash Raj Films and director Mohit Suri—powerhouses of romance in their own right—have joined hands to bring love back to the big screen with Saiyaara. And they have lyricist Irshad Kamil in tow on the music front.

Starring debutant Ahaan Panday alongside Aneet Padda, Saiyaara has already begun to make waves. The teaser has been released, and the film’s first two songs, its title track, Saiyaara and the heartbreak anthem Barbaad, are gaining momentum. Both songs already echo the musical legacy that YRF, Suri, and Kamil are known for.

With its growing musical fanbase, Saiyaara might just become one of those Bollywood albums that live on long after their release. Here are a few iconic albums it could soon join:

Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)

An evergreen romantic favourite, RHTDM still tops love-song playlists even two decades later. From Kaise Main Kahoon Tujhse to the sensual Zara Zara, the soundtrack has aged like fine wine and continues to be adored by Gen Z.

Aashiqui 2 (2013)

Mohit Suri's signature is musical brilliance, and Aashiqui 2 is proof. The soundtrack became an anthem for heartbroken lovers across the country. To this day, radio stations return to its songs—especially the title track—during Valentine's Day.

Rockstar (2011)

Every song in Rockstar is a masterpiece, but Tum Ho and Nadaan Parindey stand out as immortal classics. Interestingly, the album’s haunting lyrics were penned by none other than Irshad Kamil—also the man behind Saiyaara’s lyrics.

Kabir Singh (2019)

With smash hits like Bekhayali and Kaise Hua, Kabir Singh revived the soulful love ballad era for a new generation. Unsurprisingly, Irshad Kamil was again one of the key lyricists behind the album. Bekhayali, in particular, became an instant anthem, with listeners across age groups singing along to its passionate chorus.

Malang (2020)

Another Mohit Suri-directed gem, Malang offered a varied palette—from the high-energy title track to the breezy Humraah and the hauntingly beautiful Chal Ghar Chalen. The album captured every mood of love, loss, and longing.

With such a lineage of iconic music and love stories, Saiyaara seems poised to step into the same league. If the early signs are anything to go by, we might just be witnessing the rebirth of Bollywood romance, set to the tune of Saiyaara.
